Velda “Madge” Barton, age 90, of Thornton, CO, passed away September 6, 2016, at the Alpine Living Center, Thornton, CO.
Madge was born March 17, 1926, in Bingham, NE, to Diles and Eula (Moon) Howell. Her family moved to Edgemont, SD where she attended 1st – 12th grade; graduating from Edgemont High School in 1943, a valedictorian and MVP of her basketball team. Madge married Merle Barton in 1949, and in 1952, they moved to AK. She had a career in banking for 30 years at National Bank of Alaska until her retirement in 1976. Madge and Merle moved to Congress, AZ, in 1976, and lived there until 1994, when Merle passed away. In 1994, she moved back to AK to be with her daughter and some of her grandkids. In 2006, she moved to CO with her daughter and her husband Scott Carlson.
Madge lived a full life of traveling and watching her grandkids and great grandkids grow up. She attended her high school class reunions every time they had one through 2014. Madge touched everyone’s life she met and came in contact with. She is and will always be loved and missed dearly.
Madge is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Scott) Carlson; son, Lee Barton; six grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; 3 nephews, Jack (Connie) Howell; Dennis (Helen) Howell; Bobby (Judy) Howell; as well as many great nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 16, 2016, at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs, SD. Committal services will be held at 10:00 a.m., September 17, 2016, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
