Jane (Anderson) Coates

Jane Hannah (Andersen) Coates, 99, of Edgemont, passed away July 29, 2016, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Jane was born October 10, 1916, to Hans and Mary Susan (Cooksey) Andersen in the Andersen ranch home in Fall River County near Burdock, SD. She was the 9th child of 12; and was the last surviving member of her family.
Jane attended her first eight grades in Argentine School at Burdock. In her 8th grade, she won the County Spelling Contest, and represented Fall River County at the State Spelling Contest. Jane attended high school in Edgemont; where she lettered in sports and drama; being the highest scoring player on her basketball team, and first president of the National Thespians Organization. Jane graduated as Salutatorian of the class of 1934.
April 29, 1935, Jane was united in marriage to James A. Coates. They had four children: Edwin, Albert, Lucille, and Donald. Fourteen grandchildren came to broaden their clan, and thirty great-grandchildren, with another expected momentarily; plus two great great grandchildren.
Jane was one of the best-known and best-liked residents of Edgemont: working at the Edgemont Bakery, and Black Hills Power, before serving 25 years at the Edgemont Bank. She was active in PEO, a leader in the Sr. Citizens and Elderly Meals of Edgemont. Jane was also a woman of strong, vibrant faith; working in the Church virtually all of her life, in every capacity: Church Board, United Methodist Women, Choir, Sunday School teacher for over 80 years. She loved dancing and pinochle, doing both within weeks of her death; and was an accomplished ceramic artist and piano player.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; daughter, Lucille; son, Albert; granddaughters; Kandita Muhm, and Michelle (Muhm) Cobb; as well as her parents, and all of her siblings.
She is survived by her sons: Ed and wife, Ginny, of Hot Springs; Don and wife, Patty, of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter-in-law, Sandy of Cedar Rapids, IA; twelve grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; as well as dozens of nieces and nephews with their families. Jane will be missed by them all, and by hundreds who were beneficiaries of her light and love, friendship and inspiration.
A visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 4, 2016, at the United Church in Edgemont with Rev. Kori Lehrkamp and Rev. Peary Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at the Edgemont Cemetery near Edgemont.
